“The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Each evening we see the sun set. We know that the earth is turning away from it. Yet the knowledge, the explanation, never quite fits the sight.” – John Berger
Hola! Happy happy new year!
I open this year with a shoot from last year that ignited inspiration and power to start this 2018 with new work and ideas.
The shoot’s aim was to empower women and men to show the fragility yet the strength of our presence in this world.
In 2017, Julia started a platform called, “So, I had an abortion…”, where people can share their abortion stories anonymously. She gives a safe and non-judgemental space for anyone who has made the decision to terminate a pregnancy or supported a loved one in doing so (friend, family, lover). It centers on the power of storytelling, giving people the space to share and realize how they are not alone.
“So, I had an abortion…” according to Julia is built on intersectional feminism and as such recognises that pregnancy (+ the prevention; care; termination of it) is not exclusively a cisgendered/hetero experience. Asserting that “reproductive justice is every body’s fight”.
As soon as I head Julia’s project was drawn to capture the power she embodies and the inspiration she has given a lot of people with her work.
I hope you enjoy this shoot as much as I did and hope you can check her platform!
